Comienza la "fiesta" en Australia, tenemos un nuevo Ciclón Tropical que ha sido bautizado con el nombre de MÓNICA. Está localizado al Noreste del país de los koalas.

A Cyclone WATCH is now current for coastal and island communities between Torres
Strait and Cooktown, and elsewhere on Cape York Peninsula north of Aurukun.

At 10pm EST, Tropical Cyclone Monica, Category 1(Escala australiana), was centred near latitude
12.6 south longitude 149.4 east, which is 550 km kilometres northeast of
Cooktown and 640 km east of Lockhart River. The cyclone is moving west-southwest
at about 10 km/h.

Tropical Cyclone Monica is expected to intensify and adopt a general westward
track over the next 24 to 48 hours. It is expected to cross the northern Cape
Yorke Peninsula coast Wednesday morning and continue to move westward into the
Gulf of Carpentaria.

People in coastal and island communities between Torres Strait and Cooktown, and
elsewhere on Cape York Peninsula north of Aurukun, should consider what action
they will need to take if the cyclone threat increases and listen to the next
advice at 5am EST Tuesday. If you are unsure about actions to be taken,
information is available from your local government or local State Emergency
Service.

The next Tropical Cyclone Advice will be issued by 5am EST Tuesday.

Fijaros en el mapa del modelo de trayectoria. Si es cierto que golpea tierra por ahí, estará breve tiempo en tierra y se adentrará en el golfo que hay al norte de Australia. Mal asunto porque volvería a ganar fuerza y volvería a golpear zonas del norte de Australia. :o

Esperemos que se dirija más al sur y así de esta manera, sus daños serán menores.

gusts up to 170 km/hr. Monica should then continue to move westward into the
Gulf of Carpentaria.

A CYCLONE WATCH is current south to a line from Cooktown on the east coast to
Kowanyama on the west coast. A CYCLONE WATCH has also been issued for Northern
Territory coastal and island communities between Groote Eylandt and Elcho Island
including Nhulunbuy.

At 10 pm EST, Severe Tropical Cyclone Monica, Category 3 (escala australiana), was centred near
latitude
13.0 south longitude 145.6 east, which is 280 kilometres north of Cooktown and
230 kilometres east of Lockhart River. The cyclone is moving west at about
18 km/h.

Tropical Cyclone Monica is expected to intensify further overnight and continue
moving on a general westward track. DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts above 130 km/h
may develop between Cape Melville and Cape Flattery including Lizard Island
tonight, and should extend onto the coast between Torres Strait and Cape
Melville from early Wednesday morning.

The VERY DESTRUCTIVE core of Monica with wind gusts up to 220 km/hr is expected
to cross the coast in the general area of Lockhart River late Wednesday morning.

Tropical Cyclone Monica is expected to continue moving westwards across Cape
York Peninsula later Wednesday and into the Gulf of Carpentaria early on
Thursday. Gales may develop about the Northern Territory coast between Groote
Eylandt and Elcho Island, including Nhulunbuy, late Thursday night.

Details of Severe Tropical Cyclone Monica, Category 3, for 10 pm EST Tuesday.
Central Pressure : 970 Hectopascals
Location of Centre : within 40 kilometres of
latitude 13.0 degrees south
longitude 145.6 degrees east
230 km east of Lockhart River.
Recent Movement : West at 18 kilometres per hour
Destructive winds : out to 75 kilometres from the centre
Maximum wind gusts : 180 kilometres per hour, and INTENSIFYING.

People in communities in Torres Strait and over Cape York Peninsula north of a
line from Pormpuraaw to Cape Flattery should complete preparations quickly and
be prepared to shelter in a safe place.

Coastal residents between Cape Grenville and Cape Melville are specifically
warned of the dangerous storm tide as the cyclone crosses the coast. The sea is
likely to rise steadily up to a level significantly above the normal tide, with
damaging waves and flooding of some low-lying areas extending some way inland.
People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take
measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to follow
instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so by the
authorities.

People in the watch area should consider what action they will need to take if
the cyclone threat increases and listen to the next advice at 2 am EST

Mónica, a punto de golpear tierra. Esta vez no me lo pierdo, usualmente siempre me pillan dormido los golpeos de estos Ciclones en tierra.

Atentos que después de golpear tierra, volverá a adentrarse en el Océano con categoría 2 (escala australiana)

Según los pronosticos, cuando golpee tierra perderá fuerza de 3 a 2 (escala australiana), pero cuando se adentre de nuevo en tierra, volverá a fortalecerse.

Muy atentos a su entrada en el Golfo de Carpentaria, ya que en esa zona la temperatura del agua del mar está excesivamente caliente y va a ser una gran fuente de energía para reactivarse.

A CYCLONE WATCH is current for Northern Territory coastal and island communities
between Groote Eylandt and Milingimbi including Elcho Island and Nhulunbuy.

At 7 pm EST, Severe Tropical Cyclone Monica, Category 3 (escala australiana), was centred over land
near latitude 13.3 south longitude 143.1 east, about 60 kilometres south-
southwest of Lockhart River, and moving west at around 15 km/hr.

The VERY DESTRUCTIVE core of Monica with wind gusts to 180 km/hr is expected to
move across central Cape York Peninsula overnight and be in the general vicinity
of Aurukun on Thursday morning.

DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts above 130 km/hr could occur north to Weipa and
south to Coen.

Tropical Cyclone Monica is expected to continue moving in a general westerly
direction across the Gulf of Carpentaria during Thursday. Gales may develop
about the Northern Territory coast between Groote Eylandt and Milingimbi
including Elcho Island and Nhulunbuy during Friday.

Details of Severe Tropical Cyclone Monica, Category 3, for 7 pm EST Wednesday.
Central Pressure : 965 Hectopascals
Location of Centre : within 40 kilometres of
   latitude 13.3 degrees south
   longitude 143.1 degrees east
   60 km south southwest of Lockhart River
Recent Movement : west about 15 km/hr
Destructive winds : out to 75 kilometres from the centre
Maximum wind gusts : 180 kilometres per hour

Very heavy flooding rain will occur over the Penisula tonight.
People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should continue to
take the appropriate measures and follow the advice given by authorities.

Coastal residents between Weipa and Aurukun are specifically warned of the
dangerous storm tide as the cyclone crosses the west coast on Thursday morning.
The sea is likely to rise steadily up to a level well above the normal tide,
with damaging waves and flooding of some low-lying areas close to the shoreline.
People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take
measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to follow

instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so by the
authorities.

Sea levels on the east coast should no longer exceed the highest tide of the
year.

People in the path of this dangerous cyclone should stay calm and remain in a
secure shelter while the very destructive winds continue. Do not venture outside
if you find yourself in the eye of the cyclone - very destructive winds from a
different direction could resume at any time. Listen to the advice and follow
the directions of Police or State Emergency Service personnel.

The next warning will be issued by 11 pm Wednesday.

Bueno compañeros, en breve nuestra amiga Mónica entrará en el Golfo de Carpentaria. Vamos a ver como evoluciona y esperemos que no cause muchos daños en su segundo golpeo contra tierra. El problema de este segundo golpeo, es que esa zona australiana está muchos más habitada que la del primer golpeo.

Como podeis observar, su entrada en tierra le ha debilitado muy debilmente. Cuando Mónica cruce el Golfo y se adentre nuevamente en tierra, nuevamente será por escaso periodo de tiempo. Volverá a adentrarse en el Océano y después quién sabe a dónde irá. No descarto la posibilidad de un 3er golpeo en tierra.

Ya tenemos a nuestra amiga Mónica en el Golfo de Carpentaria. En estos momentos, es una Huracán Categoría 1 por sólo 1 kt, jejeje. ;) Creo y espero equivocarme, que se va a reforzar nuevamente ya que este golfo está muy caliente.

Para el CIMSS, Mónica sería, en estos momentos, una Tormenta Tropical y estaría muriendo lentamente. A saber tú quién tiene razón.

Últimisima hora sobre Mónica. Ha variado su rumbo bruscamente y ahora se dirige al Norte-Nordeste :o Parece que estuviera dando un giro de 180º.

Si. Ha habido un momento, en el que Mónica parecía que estaba bailando sobre la pista de baile (Golfo de Carpentaria) ;). Bueno, el ultimo Aviso indica que sigue fortaleciéndose.

Fijaros en su Ojo, es muy similar al que tuvo el Huracán Wilma, la temporada pasada, en el Atlántico. Esperemos que no golpee tierra, porque si no... Aunque saliera del Golfo, pienso que seguiría con mucha fuerza ya que las temperaturas del agua del mar, fuera del Golfo, están igual de calientes.

Pues ya podemos decir que el Ojo de Mónica ha golpeado tierra y ha rozado una localidad (Cape Wessel). Esperemos que no hayan habido víctimas mortales.

El meteograma de Darwin nos indica que se esperan precipitaciones de hasta 200 mm, en tan solo 48 horas.

Según el CIMSS, lleva toda la mañana en 877 mb. Si fuera así, está a tan solo 7 mb del record de todos los records mundiales. ;D

Sirens sound as cyclone nears NT coast

Emergency sirens have sounded at Nhulunbuy on the Northern Territory's Gove Peninsula, calling people to cyclone shelters.

Communities across Arnhem Land are on alert this morning, as cyclone Monica edges closer to the Northern Territory coast.

The category 5 system, which brought floods to north Queensland last week, has core wind gusts of 320 kilometres an hour.

It is expected to make landfall later today.

Gales with gusts up to 120 kilometres an hour are being experienced between Cape Shield and Elcho Island.

Emergency services in Nhulunbuy opened the town's cyclone shelter at 8:00pm ACST yesterday because 70 people were lining up outside to get in.

Maliti Yunipingu is in the shelter with his family and he says he is worried about the size of cyclone Monica.

"I've been here last year when cyclone Ingrid came through," he said. "It's got bad to worse."

Resident Joanne James says the region is bracing for the worst.

"There's an enormous amount of demountable buildings, which a lot of the contractor people who support the mine live in, and they're fairly demountable," she said.

"They're not particularly cyclone-coded to any degree, certainly not for a category 5 cyclone."

The weather bureau's acting regional director, Mike Bergin, says the centre of the cyclone will track to the north of Nhulunbuy but significant rain and winds will still cause trouble in the town.

"Some of the outer rain bands during the afternoon are likely to produce some significant wind gusts as well, so although the centre of the system is likely to track to the north of Nhulunbuy the outer rain bands are still likely to be a problem," Mr Bergin said.

Darwin warned

Mr Bergin says Darwin residents need to start thinking about their cyclone preparations.

He expects cyclone Monica will track in a general westerly direction over the next few days.

"We're not expecting the gale-force winds to extend to the Darwin area until early on Tuesday morning, but people need to be thinking about what they might need to do preparation-wise between now and then," he said.

Schools closed

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has approved the closure of schools between Nhulunbuy and Maningrida until at least Wednesday.

Tuesday is a public holiday and the Northern Territory Government says it will reassess the situation late in the day and tell staff and students what will happen for the rest of the week.

The deputy chief executive in charge of schools, John Dove, says the Education Department is closely monitoring the situation through the counter disaster council.

"Some of the schools will be used as evacuation centres or emergency shelters," he said.

"We also think, in terms of the safety of the students at this time and if there's any chance of the cyclone being in the area, then it's better off that they are with their parents and somewhere safe."

Ojo, debido a las muñltiples fuentes de informacion no dbemos fiarnos de nada hasta que haya confirmaciones "ofiaciales"... yo sigo aportando de mis fuentes habituales... segun FNMOC esta en 155 kts (286 km/h) y en 879 mb de presion... sin embargo, los datos de weatherunderground que no se de donde salen aunque creo que son del NCH americano, dice que estaba a las 12 horas con VIENTOS SOSTENIDOS DE 165 KTS, O SEA, 305 KM/H... IMPRESIONANTE DE CUALQUIER FORMA...

Segun los reportes del CIMSS los datos son asombrosos... en apenas 4 horas la temperatura del ojo ha bajado de casi 19ºC a 15ºC, lo que significa que esta descendiendo aire frio a lo bestia... la temperatura de la region fria ha bajado de -80'5ºC a -82ºC... y la presion sigue cayendo, en esas 4 horas ha caido de 877 a 868'5 mb... INCREIBLE...

Lo que hay en Nueva Zelanda, es una borrasca normal. Pero quién sabe, cualquier día salgo por la puerta de mi casa y me encuentro un Huracán. ;) Ahora mismo el Navy está siguiendo un Sistema Tropical en el Océano Índico, tiene 1004 mb y 20 kts. Aunque es poco, ya está empezando a adquirir giro ciclónico.

Las temporadas son diferentes... Ahora mismo están en plena temporada allá.

Hola amigo, a ver si puedo resolver tus dudas.

- Aunque tengamos dos Hemisferios, esto no quiere decir que tengamos sólo dos temporadas de huracanes oficiales. Oficialmente tenemos seis Temporadas Oficiales, estas son: Atlántico, Pacífico Este, Pacífico Central, Pacífico Oeste, Océano Índico y Hemisferio Sur.

- En estos momentos, la zona de Australia (Hemisferio Sur) está en plena temporada ciclónica (Julio 2005 hasta Junio 2006)

- Sobre lo de la temperatura del agua, te puedo decir que ahora mismo en todo el Hemisferio Sur, el agua está muy caliente. La temperatura supera los 30º, en una amplísima zona y a esto se añade las anomalías positivas que se están registrando. Sin ir más lejos, el Golfo de Carpentaria (donde Mónica renació y se fortaleció) está registrando anomalías positivas de +4º.
¿Influye las anomalías positivas en la formación de un Sistema? No sé que pensará la gente, yo creo que sí. Acordaros del Huracán Epsilón, que nació en aguas de las Bermudas (lugar atípico de formación) aprovechando las anomalías positivas de hasta 6º que habían. Otra "cepa" de Huracanes, la encontramos en la zona de Cabo Verde (Zeta y Delta), debido a sus altas anomalías positivas.

- Sobre el tema de la Presión, pues acuérdate del Huracán Wilma (Récord de presión del Atlántico), en pleno Octubre (se supone el que mar ya no esta tan caliente).

Para el Navy, Mónica sólo tiene 30 kts y 1000 mb. Para el CIMSS, Mónica ya no existe como Sistema Tropical.

Tío, obligatorio felicitarte, en serio... Te has convertido en un crack en el seguimiento de huracanes. Estoy deseando que empiece la temporada Atlántica para contar con tus seguimientos. Una cosa es la teoría de la formación de los sistemas tormentosos (sean cuales sean) que es lo que más me gusta a mí, pero otra muy distinta es seguir la evolución de los huracanes, y en esto eres un maestro :o :o :o :-X Espero que nos sigas deleitando con toda esta interesante información ;) ;) ;)

Desgraciadamente, voy a seguir hablando de Mónica. :o En las próximas horas, se espera que se adentre al mar como una Baja, pero no tardará mucho en reorganizarse y volver a coger Categoría 1 (Escala Australiana), que aunque sea poco... ¿quién sabe si vuelve a convertirse en un Ciclón devastador.

Sobre lo que fue Mónica, aunque se ha adentrado en el mar como una Baja Tropical, seguirá así hasta entrar nuevamente en tierra. Por lo que se vé, está dejando precipitaciones muy intensas.

Hola a todos, soy nueva por aki, impresionante este ciclon, realmente me he kedado con la boca abierta, con el registro de sus vientos maximos y la presion. :o :o

Bueno yo soy de Cancun México, aunk aun no he pasado por ese hilo, me imagino k habran hablado y bastante de Wilma (todavia se me pone la piel chinita de recordarlo) Realmente no me imagino como se habran sentido los Australianos con esa presion, si bien aki Wilma no llego con los 882 registrados como record, yo mas bien sentia k se me iban a reventar los timpanos de lo fuerte k era la presion.

Me encanto su seguimiento, realmente sabia de la existencia de las diferentes temporadas de ciclones y tifones, aunk no se bien entre k fechas son todas. Pero algo k me causo curiosidad es haber visto k los ciclones del hemisferio sur giran en sentido contrario a los ciclones que tenemos en el norte, jejeje apunte de novata :P

Y bueno, entrando en septiembre k es cuando empieza lo mero bueno en el Atlantico, los estare viendo mas seguido ;) :-*

Bienvenida lovegirl ! hay varios usuarios desde México, una alegria veros por aqui. El seguiento de huracanes se hace en este foro desde hace tiempo, pero se hace mejor desde que se creó este subforo de huracanes el año pasado.
