The center of Matthew is exposed to the southwest of the deep
convection due to moderate southwesterly shear. Despite the shear,
data from an Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft show that
Matthew is a little stronger this morning. The aircraft has
measured peak 850 mb flight-level winds of 80 kt, and believable
SFMR winds of around 60 kt, which is the basis for the initial
intensity. The minimum central pressure reported by the aircraft
is down to 996 mb.
Given the current shear and structure of Matthew, only slight
strengthening is predicted during the next 24 hours. The shear is
forecast to slowly decrease over the next few days, although there
are some differences in the upper-level wind forecasts between the
ECMWF and GFS models. The ECMWF keeps a band of southwesterly
upper-level winds near Matthew, while the GFS generally shows lower
shear. The NHC forecast assumes that there will be a reduction in
shear and calls for intensification similar to the previous
advisory. The official wind speed forecast is between the lower
statistical guidance and the more aggressive HWRF and GFDL models.
Matthew is moving at 275/14 kt. The tropical storm is expected to
move westward to the south of a mid- to upper-level ridge over the
western Atlantic during the next couple of days. In about 48 hours,
Matthew should turn northwestward when it approaches the western
periphery of the ridge. After that time, the tropical cyclone is
forecast to turn northward while a mid- to upper-level trough
develops over the Gulf of Mexico. The GFS is still much faster than
the ECMWF at taking Matthew northward. Although the east/west spread
among the higher quality track models is somewhat smaller this
morning, there is still significant spread among the ECMWF ensembles
beyond 3 days, and the overall confidence in the track forecast is
still low. The new NHC track forecast is essentially an update of
the previous forecast and is very close to the multi-model
consensus.

Data from a reconnaissance plane indicate that Matthew is
strengthening. The estimated minimum pressure from a dropsonde
is 983 mb. The SFMR instrument measured an isolated peak wind of
77 kt in the northwest quadrant near the center. However, the
flight-level winds measured in this mission so far only support an
initial intensity of 70 kt.
The cloud pattern is much better organized than 24 hours ago, and
a recent SSMIS pass showed an eye feature. This was confirmed by the
crew onboard the reconnaissance aircraft which reported a circular
22 n mi eye open to the south. Images from Curacao radar also show
the center of the cyclone becoming better defined. However, since
some southwesterly wind shear is still affecting the cyclone, only a
slight strengthening is forecast during the next 12 to 24 hours.
After that time, the shear is forecast to relax some, and the
overall environment is expected to be more conducive for
intensification. The NHC forecast continues to be above the model
consensus, and is very similar to the forecast issued by my
predecessor.
Fixes from a reconnaissance plane and radar from Curacao indicate
that Matthew is moving toward the west or perhaps just south of due
west at about 12 kt. A strong ridge to the north is forecast to keep
Matthew moving westward across the southern portion of the Central
Caribbean for the next 2 days. After that time, Matthew will be
located on the western side of the high and ahead of a mid-latitude
trough over the Gulf of Mexico. This steering pattern should force
the cyclone to turn toward the north at about 5 to 7 kt. The NHC
track forecast is very close to the multi-model consensus, which in
fact has not changed very much today, and does not deviate much from
the previous forecast.
Global models, primarily the GFS and the ECMWF, continue to show a
strong hurricane in the vicinity of Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti in 3 or
4 days.

NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL AL142016
1100 AM EDT FRI SEP 30 2016
Matthew has continued to intensify this morning. An Air Force
Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft recently measured a peak SFMR wind
of 99 kt and a 700-mb wind of 103 kt. (http://Based on these data, the
initial intensity is set to [size=18pt]100 kt[/size] for this advisory.) The aircraft
reported that the central pressure had fallen to 968 mb, and also
observed a 16 n mi wide eye that is open to the southwest. Water
vapor imagery shows a well-established poleward outflow channel,
with outflow also expanding in the southwest quadrant.
This intensification has occurred despite analyzed southwesterly
shear of around 20 kt. The SHIPS model output shows this shear
continuing for the next 36 hours or so, and as a result, the SHIPS
and LGEM models show Matthew weakening during this time. This
weakening trend is also shown by the HWRF and COAMPS-TC hurricane
models. However, I am reluctant to show a decrease in intensity
given that the environment around the cyclone does not appear to
change much. Some short-term fluctuations in intensity are
certainly possible, but the official forecast remains above much of
the guidance in the short range and keeps the intensity at 100 kt
through 72 hours. Some weakening is shown by days 4 and 5 due to
potential land interaction. Late in the period the NHC forecast is
closest to the HWRF model.
Matthew has been moving west-southwestward during the past few
hours, with an initial motion estimate of 255/10. The cyclone
should continue moving south of due west for the next 12 hours to
the south of a mid-level ridge nosing into the northern Caribbean
Sea. After that, Matthew should gradually turn poleward as the
ridge retreats eastward and a trough moves into the eastern Gulf of
Mexico. There remains a large amount of spread in the guidance,
both along and across track. The ECMWF, ECMWF ensemble mean, and
the UKMET are slower and on the right side of the guidance envelope
at 48 hours and beyond. The GFS, GEFS ensemble mean, HWRF, and
COAMPS-TC are faster and farther to the left. The new NHC track
forecast has been adjusted a little to the south in the first 36
hours due to the initial motion, and lies a little south of the
consensus and close to the GFS at this time range. Beyond that
time, the official forecast is an update of the previous one and
lies a little to the east of the latest multi-model consensus and a
bit to the west of the GFS/ECMWF blend.
It is important to remind users that average NHC track forecast
errors are around 175 miles at day 4 and 230 miles at day 5.
Therefore, it is too soon to rule out possible hurricane impacts
from Matthew in Florida.

NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL AL142016

The overall organization of the hurricane has changed little
overnight, with the small eye remaining distinct in infrared
satellite pictures. A very recent AMSR2 microwave overpass showed
no indication of an eyewall replacement, but there was a notable dry
slot between the inner core and the outer bands over the southern
portion of the circulation. Although Dvorak data T-numbers
decreased slightly at 0600 UTC, the objective and subjective CI
numbers are about the same as before, so the initial intensity will
remain 130 kt for this advisory. Another Air Force Reserve
Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate Matthew this
morning, which should provide a better assessment of the hurricane's
current strength and structure. Although some weakening is predicted
during the next couple of days, Matthew is expected to remain a
powerful hurricane when it approaches the islands of the Greater
Antilles in a couple of days. The upper-level wind environment is
expected to remain favorable over the Bahamas, and warm waters in
that area should allow Matthew to maintain much of its intensity
while it moves over that area later in the forecast period.
Matthew has been moving slowly west-northwestward during the past
few hours, but the longer-term motion estimate is northwest or 320
degrees at 4 kt. The forecast track reasoning remains unchanged
from before. Matthew should move slowly northwestward today,
and then turn northward tonight as a mid- to upper-level trough
develops over the eastern Gulf of Mexico. This motion will take
Matthew towards Jamaica, western Haiti, and eastern Cuba over the
next couple of days. After that time, the global models bend
Matthew back toward the north-northwest between the aforementioned
trough and a developing ridge off the northeast United States coast.
The dynamical models are in good agreement on this scenario through
72 hours, with increasing spread thereafter. The GFS, ECMWF, and
UKMET are along the western side of the guidance at days 4 and 5,
while the HWRF is along the eastern side. The latest NHC track is
close to the model consensus through day 3, but is west of the
consensus at 96 and 120 h, to be closer to the typically better
performing global models.
It is important to remind users that average NHC track forecast
errors are around 175 miles at day 4 and 230 miles at day 5.
Therefore, it is too soon to rule out possible hurricane impacts
from Matthew in Florida.

localizado cerca de la latitud 14.3 norte, longitud 74.6 oeste.
Matthew se esta moviendo hacia el noroeste a casi 5 mph (7 km/h).
Un giro hacia norte se espera esta noche. En la trayectoria
pronosticada, el centro de Matthew llegara al suroeste de Haiti y
Jamaica el lunes.
Los vientos maximos sostenidos estan cerca de 145 mph (220 km/h) con
rafagas mas altas. Matthew es un huracan de categoria 4 segun la
Escala de Vientos de Huracanes de Saffir-Simpson. Algunas
fluctuaciones en intensidad son posibles durante los proximos dias,
pero se espera que Matthew permanezca como un huracan poderoso hasta
el martes.

DISCUSION Y PRONOSTICO DE 48 HORAS

A las 800 AM AST (1200 UTC), el centro del Huracan Matthew estaba
localizado cerca de la latitud 15.4 norte, longitud 74.9 oeste.
Matthew se esta moviendo hacia el norte a casi 6 mph (9 km/h). Un

LLUVIA: Se espera que Matthew produzca acumulaciones totales de
lluvia de 15 a 25 pulgadas sobre el sur de Haiti y el suroeste de la

Se espera que Matthew produzca acumulaciones totales de lluvia de 8
a 12 pulgadas sobre el sureste de las Bahamas, con posibles

Recon finding #Matthew near-steady state with slight fluctuations in pressure/winds. SFMR found 124 kt on recent pass with CP fix at 940 mb.
...esto supone que MATTHEW se convierte en el ciclón tropical en aguantar la categoría 4 en el Caribe desde que se tienen registros... y ya sabéis que esto sucede desde hace más de 100 años...

Sin indicios de reemplazo del ojo y presión con tendencia a la baja no seria raro si Matthew azota la Península Tiburón de Haití como CAT5:
Pues lo cierto es que se intensificó un poco más de nuevo, y sin alcanzar la intensidad pico que alcanzó cuando llegó a la categoría 5, sí es posible que esté registrando la presión más baja en todo su ciclo de vida

An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft this evening measured
two peak SFMR winds of 125 kt in the northeastern eyewall, along
with a peak flight-level wind of 129 kt. The lowest pressure
measured by a dropsonde has been 934 mb, down 6 mb since the
previous flight. Based on these data, the initial intensity has been
increased to 125 kt.
Matthew continues to move a little east of due north, or 010/07 kt.
There is no change to the previous short-term track forecast
reasoning. Matthew is expected to move northward around the western
periphery of a strong deep-layer ridge for the next 24 hours,
followed by a north-northwestward motion at 36 and 48 hours. That
portion of the new forecast track is essentially the same as the
previous advisory, bringing Matthew over the southwestern peninsula
of Haiti tonight and near or over eastern Cuba on Tuesday. Beyond 48
hours, the GFS has again trended westward, and now lies closer to
the UKMET model track. This change might be related to the
mid-/upper-level trough currently located over the eastern Gulf of
Mexico, which is now forecast to split, with the northern portion
lifting out to the northeast and dissipating while the southern
portion cuts of into a low pressure system that drops southward over
the northwestern Caribbean Sea by 36-48 hours. The new track
forecast has again been shifted westward closer to Florida, and lies
near a blend of the 18Z GFS and 12Z ECMWF model solutions.
Only slight weakening is expected during the next couple of days due
to Matthew interacting with the land masses of western Haiti and
eastern Cuba. After the hurricane emerges over the Atlantic waters
between Cuba and the Bahamas, low vertical wind shear and warm SSTs
of near 30C should help Matthew to recover some before southwesterly
wind shear increases by 96-120 hours and induces a faster rate of
weakening. The new NHC intensity forecast is basically identical to
the previous advisory, and closely follows the consensus model IVCN.
KEY MESSAGES:
1. Matthew is likely to produce devastating impacts from storm
surge, extreme winds, heavy rains, flash floods, and/or mudslides in
portions of the watch and warning areas in Haiti, Cuba, and the
Bahamas. Please consult statements from the meteorological services
and other government officials in those countries.
2. Direct hurricane impacts are possible in Florida later this
week. Tropical storm and/or hurricane watches are likely tomorrow
morning for portions of the Florida peninsula and the Florida Keys.
3. Tropical storm or hurricane conditions could affect portions of
Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina later this week or this
weekend, even if the center of Matthew remains offshore. It is too
soon to specify what, if any, direct impacts Matthew might have on
the remainder of the U.S. east coast farther north. At a minimum,
very dangerous beach and boating conditions are likely along much of
the U.S. east coast later this week and weekend.

Parece una broma la trayectoria... :o Las Bahamas se vería afectada 2 veces y la costa de Florida se iria a la mierda hablando claro. Y la secuencia seguiría que el huracan volvería hacer un recorrido paralelo a la costa de Florida, pero mas corto que el primero.

Aunque esta mañana lo han rebajado a categoría 3, da la impresión de que vuelve a intensificarse... veremos...
En principio eso parece según los pronósticos a 72 horas del #HRWF.

Buenas tardes: Mi hermana reside en Miami en el distrito de Coral Gables, dice que no paran de emitir avisos, que lo peor se espera mas al norte de Miami, que alli les afectara como tormenta tropical (en principio, crossing fingers como dicen alli) que se esperan vientos intensos, lluvias muy fuertes y ocasionalmente tornados. Que en los supermercados ya se acabo el agua y los productos de primera necesidad, pero que en principio no hablan de evacuacion, de momento. Saludos.
Eso,las previsoficiales hablan sobre que allí el impacto será menor, pero no hay que fiarse. A ese respecto:

Buenas tardes: Mi hermana reside en Miami en el distrito de Coral Gables, dice que no paran de emitir avisos, que lo peor se espera mas al norte de Miami, que alli les afectara como tormenta tropical (en principio, crossing fingers como dicen alli) que se esperan vientos intensos, lluvias muy fuertes y ocasionalmente tornados. Que en los supermercados ya se acabo el agua y los productos de primera necesidad, pero que en principio no hablan de evacuacion, de momento. Saludos.

NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL AL142016
500 AM EDT THU OCT 06 2016
The satellite presentation of Matthew has improved markedly
overnight with eye reappearing and warming within the past couple
of hours. The eye is also embedded within a very symmetric
central dense overcast with cloud tops colder than -70C. An Air
Force Reconnaissance Hurricane Hunter that just flew through the
center reported peak 700 mb flight-level winds of 132 kt, SFMR
winds around 103 kt, and a pressure of 944 mb, which is
down about 18 mb from last evening. Using a blend of the
flight-level and SFMR winds, the initial intensity is set at
110 kt. Environmental conditions appear favorable for continued
strengthening today and Matthew is expected to become an extremely
dangerous category 4 hurricane while it moves over the northwestern
Bahamas and approaches the east coast of Florida. After 24 hours,
land interaction is likely to cause some weakening, and later in the
period increasing shear should cause a more rapid decrease in
winds. The NHC forecast is above the most of guidance during the
first 24 hours due to the recent increase in organization, but is
close to the consensus thereafter.
Aircraft and satellite fixes show that Matthew is moving
northwestward or 320/10 kt. Matthew is expected to move around
the western periphery of a subtropical ridge that is forecast to
gradually retreat eastward during the next day or two. This
pattern should steer Matthew northwestward over the northwestern
Bahamas today, then north-northwestward very near the east coast
of Florida late today through Friday night. The models are tightly
clustered through 48 hours, and the NHC track is near the consensus
of the GFS and ECMWF models through that time. After 48 hours, the
hurricane should turn northeastward as a broad trough approaches
the Great Lakes region. The trough is expected to pass north of
Matthew in about 72 hours, which is expected to cause the cyclone to
turn eastward, then southeastward late in the forecast period.
There is still significant spread in the long-range guidance so
there is lower than normal confidence in the days 4 and 5 track
prediction.
KEY MESSAGES:
1. Matthew is likely to produce devastating impacts from storm
surge, extreme winds, and heavy rains in the central and
northwestern Bahamas today, and along portions of the east
coast of Florida tonight.
2. When a hurricane is forecast to take a track roughly parallel
to a coastline, as Matthew is forecast to do from Florida through
South Carolina, it becomes very difficult to specify impacts at
any one location. For example, only a small deviation of the track
to the left of the NHC forecast could bring the core of a major
hurricane onshore within the hurricane warning area in Florida and
Georgia. However, a small deviation to the right could keep the
hurricane-force winds offshore. Similarly large variations in
impacts are possible in the hurricane watch area in northeast
Georgia and South Carolina.
3. Tropical storm or hurricane conditions could affect eastern
North Carolina later this week or this weekend, even if the center
of Matthew remains offshore.
4. The National Hurricane Center is issuing Potential Storm Surge
Flooding Maps, and Prototype Storm Surge Watch/Warning Graphics for
Matthew. It is important to remember that the Potential Storm Surge
Flooding Map does not represent a forecast of expected inundation,
but rather depicts a reasonable worst-case scenario - the amount of
inundation that has a 10 percent chance of being exceeded. In
addition, because the Flooding Map is based on inputs that extend
out only to about 72 hours, it best represents the flooding
potential in those locations within the watch and warning areas in
Florida and Georgia.

Amanece sobre MATTHEW; no muy impresive, aunque viendo el radar de Miami, la estructura del ojo está bien conservada; a ver esas torres convectivas al NNW.

A NOAA Hurricane Hunter plane just reached Matthew and measured 121
kt at the 700-mb level and a minimum pressure of of 936 mb. Until
the plane finishes sampling the circulation, the initial intensity
is kept at 120 kt. There some indications that an outer eyewall is
trying to form, and perhaps an eyewall cycle will occur. If so, some
weakening could occur, but there could also be fluctuations in
intensity while the hurricane moves toward the east coast of Florida
that are not explicitly shown here. After 24 hours, the combination
of land interaction and a significant increase in the shear should
cause weakening. The NHC intensity forecast is very similar to the
SHIPS guidance during the next day or so, and it follows the trend
of the consensus thereafter.
Satellite and aircraft fixes show that Matthew is still moving
toward the northwest or 325 degrees at 11 kt. The steering flow has
not changed, and Matthew should continue to move around the western
periphery of the subtropical ridge located over the western Atlantic
during the next 24 to 36 hours. This portion of the NHC forecast is
very close to the multi-model consensus. After that time, the
hurricane will become embedded within the mid-latitude westerlies
and should turn sharply eastward for a day or so. Then the steering
pattern is forecast to change again, and the track forecast becomes
highly uncertain. Both the GFS and the ECMWF turn a much weaker
Matthew southward and southwestward. The NHC forecast follows the
southwestward trend, and is in the middle of these two global
models.
KEY MESSAGES:
1. Matthew is likely to produce devastating impacts from storm
surge, extreme winds, and heavy rains in the northwestern Bahamas
today, and along extensive portions of the east coast of Florida
tonight.
2. Evacuations are not just a coastal event. Strong winds will
occur well inland from the coast, and residents of mobile
homes under evacuation orders are urged to heed those orders.
3. Hurricane winds increase very rapidly with height, and residents
of high-rise buildings are at particular risk of strong winds. Winds
at the top of a 30-story building will average one Saffir-Simpson
category higher than the winds near the surface.
4. When a hurricane is forecast to take a track roughly parallel
to a coastline, as Matthew is forecast to do from Florida through
South Carolina, it becomes very difficult to specify impacts at
any one location. Only a small deviation of the track
to the left of the NHC forecast could bring the core of a major
hurricane onshore within the hurricane warning area in Florida and
Georgia. Modest deviations to the right could keep much of the
hurricane-force winds offshore. Similarly large variations in
impacts are possible in the hurricane watch and warning areas in
northeast Georgia and South Carolina.
5. The National Hurricane Center is issuing Potential Storm Surge
Flooding Maps, and Prototype Storm Surge Watch/Warning Graphics for
Matthew. It is important to remember that the Potential Storm Surge
Flooding Map does not represent a forecast of expected inundation,
but rather depicts a reasonable worst-case scenario - the amount of
inundation that has a 10 percent chance of being exceeded. In
addition, because the Flooding Map is based on inputs that extend
out only to about 72 hours, it best represents the flooding
potential in those locations within the watch and warning areas in
Florida and Georgia.
